Research Project FAKE-ID

FAKE-ID – Video analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect false and manipulated identities

Project Lead: Prof. Dr. Hartmut Aden & Prof. Dr. Sabrina Schönrock

Deepfakes are image and video forgeries produced using artificial intelligence (AI). They are mainly used to spread (political) disinformation, but also to manipulate digital proofs of identity.

The FAKE-ID project is developing criteria for identifying and classifying manipulated images and video data streams. Based on these criteria, a detection program will later be developed that can use AI to assess the (presumed) authenticity of digital images and videos or their forgery.
The FÖPS sub-project deals with the legal, ethical and social requirements for the development and police use of such a detection program. In the spirit of participatory research, FÖPS is also seeking dialog with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are concerned with the dangers of using AI in a security context.
